Coles Vegie Fix

Hi there :D

I hope you’re all having a great weekend!

My definition of a great weekend changes pretty spontaneously, but usually on a cold and rainy day like this, I like to stay in and snuggle.

Not that my apartment is in any shape to be giving off a cozy and snuggle-able (is that even a word?) vibe at the moment…it’s an absolute mess.

Boxes, curtain rails, just stuff everywhere – a week until the moving day!

Anyway, so today I thought I’d do a quick review on something I randomly picked up at Coles last weekend.

This Roasted Eggplant Ragu had roasted eggplant and some other veggies plus meat sauce and pasta with some fresh rocket in it.

Basically it just needs to be microwaved for about 3 minutes before serving.

It tasted quite alright, but quite strong (not salty…I don’t know how to better explain it).

In terms of convenience, it’s good because I can just grab it and go when I don’t have the time to pack lunch in the morning, and I can microwave it at uni.

But because it has quite a strong flavour, I felt like I could have mixed it up with some steamed veggies to balance it out.

Next I tried the Mexican Roast Vegetables version, which was quite spicy for me…but forgot to take a photo of it.

It was kind of meh for me though.

And lastly, I tried the Moroccan Vegetable Tagine.

In my opinion, this tasted the best out of the three (I think they only had these three flavours on the shelf at that time).

So the macros aren’t that great, but not as bad as some of the pre-packaged meals out there.

Not something I’d eat on a daily basis, but nothing wrong in trying out new stuff once in a while, I’d say.

I layered it over steamed broccoli this time.

I did not have another glassware that could show the colourful layers so I had to use this measuring cup.

Oh the things I do to photograph stuff for this blog…I had to wash another extra dish…that’s major commitment :P Haha.

If I were to buy something from this Vegie Fix range, it would definitely be this Moroccan cous cous one.

Anyhow, that’s pretty much it for now!

Have a great weekend people ;)

  1. I’ve just discovered these. I loved the mexican one but I added heaps of salt to it. Right now I’m eating the eggplant one, it’s not quite as nice, the eggplant should be roasted more, it’s still got that strongness that undercooked eggplant has. However with a fair bit of salt, a bit of cumin and chili, it’s tasting a bit better. Tomorrow I try the Moroccan one, however, I have a feeling the Mexican will be my favourite because I’m a sucker for brown rice. Have to say this is the best thing I’ve seen in a supermarket since I don’t know when! (PS: there’s no meat in any of them)

    • Yeah, for supermarket prepackaged meals, they aren’t too bad! Good for those lazy days when you just don’t want to get up and stand in the kitchen :P

  2. Prepared foods are the way of the future as our busy lives continue to speed up and less people have time to cook nutritious meals. Much to the chagrin of hard-core foodies, I think prepared food from the grocery store is here to stay, so the question from my perspective is how do small farms get in on the prepared food demand? State laws like California’s AB 1616 is a start in the right direction.

    • My local health food store stocks packaged foods from small businesses, which I think is great! At least they don’t have icky chemicals like the mainstay ones in supermarkets, so even though they are often more expensive, I personally like giving myself these little “treats” :)
